By utilizing a cyclone separator it is easier to control chips and dust in the shop environment. A large portion of chips and sawdust will be directed into the vessel you have mounted the cyclone on and much cleaner air will move on to your dust collector. This will not only make it unnecessary to empty your dust collector as often, but also keep the filter bags on your dust collector much cleaner so they work more efficiently.

Mounting your Cyclone:
Your cyclone may be mounted to a variety of sealed vessels. Keep in mind I said sealed. These may be a galvanized trash can, fibre barrel, sealed wooden box, etc. When using a trash can I make sure there is a seal by turning on the dust collector and picking up the cyclone. If the garbage can comes up with the cyclone I know I have a seal. A similar test should be done after mounting your cyclone to make sure there are no air leaks.
When mounting your cyclone you should make sure that it is secure and not top heavy. It may be necessary to strap the unit to a wall or secure the unit from the ceiling to make sure it is stable.
